What is a Flat Foot?

A flat foot is known medically as pes planus. This occurs when the rounded arch on the inner side of the sole of the foot does not exist…or disappears and collapses upon standing. It is the most common reason many doctors prescribe arch supports. There are two main recognized types of flat foot.

1. In the first, flexible flat foot, the arch disappears when standing, but an arch can be seen when the pressure is released or the foot is at rest.

2. In the second, rigid flat foot, no rounded arch can be seen even when the foot is at rest.

The Problem of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is one of the most common foot problems that Americans deal with every day. Whether you are the college athlete of the year or the village gardener, athlete’s foot can affect anyone.

Athlete’s foot is an infection on the skin of the feet that is caused by fungus. The culprit is the fungus called tinea pedis, which is quite common in the surrounding areas. This fungus practically lives and grows everywhere just as long as the area is warm and moist.

Causes of Foot Soreness from Walking

There are many possible causes of aching feet following regular walks, but here are a few of the more common ones. Probably the most common and easily fixable cause of sore feet is simply poor-fitting shoes, or shoes that may be properly fitting, but which are not suitable for extended walking.

Another possible cause of foot pain resulting from regular walking is a minor foot ailment such as plantar fasciitis, the most common type of heel pain. Plantar fasciitis causes inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament that stretches along the bottom of the foot. This ailment is commonly caused by repetitive, excessive stress on the heel tissue, and so this can certainly arise from vigorous, regular walking.
